Wales is home to nine universities, where world-leading research, established industry partnerships, and supportive learning are at the heart of the student experience. Welsh universities are recognised for strong teaching quality and graduate employability, and the country consistently attracts international students from across the world.

Universities in Wales

Wales’ nine universities each have their own distinct character, academic strengths, and locations. They include:

  • Cardiff University: Wales’ largest university and the only Welsh member of the prestigious Russell Group, with a strong global research reputation
  • Swansea University: known for engineering, computer science, and medical research, with a modern Bay Campus situated alongside the coast
  • Aberystwyth University: one of the oldest universities in Wales, founded in 1872, with particular strengths in international politics, agriculture, and the natural sciences
  • Bangor University: set between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait, with strengths in marine sciences, psychology, and environmental studies
  • Cardiff Metropolitan University:  a modern university with a strong focus on employability and professional practice
  • University of South Wales: a large, practice-led university with campuses in Cardiff, Newport, and Pontypridd
  • University of Wales Trinity Saint David: spanning campuses in Swansea, Carmarthen, and Lampeter, with strengths in creative arts and humanities
  • Wrexham University: an industry-led university in North Wales, known for applied learning and strong student support

Living in Wales

Wales offers international students a high quality of life at a lower cost than many other parts of the UK. From urban excitement in Cardiff to coastal tranquillity in Swansea, plus outdoor adventures in Snowdonia, students have access to a remarkable range of experiences throughout their studies.

Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is a vibrant city with a thriving arts, music, and food scene, as well as excellent transport links to the rest of the UK. Beyond the cities, Wales offers some of Britain’s most dramatic scenery, including Snowdonia National Park, the Brecon Beacons, and the Pembrokeshire Coast. Many of Wales’ national museums and galleries are free to enter, and the country’s rich cultural heritage, from its language and literature to its music and festivals, makes it a distinctive and memorable place to live.

Wales welcomes thousands of international students each year, and its universities are known for their close-knit communities and high levels of pastoral support.

Tuition Fees in Wales

Pakistani students are classed as international students for fee purposes and are required to pay international tuition fees at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Fee levels vary by university and subject. Welsh universities charge UK-domiciled students a maximum of £9,000 per year for undergraduate courses, but international student fees are set independently by each institution and are typically higher. Always check fee schedules directly with your chosen university before applying.

Scholarships and Funding in Wales

A range of scholarships and funding options are available to Pakistani students wishing to study in Wales at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • Chevening Scholarships fund full postgraduate degrees at UK universities, including those in Wales. Pakistan is among the top recipient countries each year.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships are open to Pakistani nationals for postgraduate study at UK universities, administered jointly by the Higher Education Commission and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
  • Many Welsh universities offer their own international scholarships, typically ranging from £1,000 to £5,000, across a broad range of subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. These are worth checking directly with individual institutions.
