Personal Statement
A personal statement is required for all UK university applications. It should explain why you are applying for your chosen course, what you hope to achieve during your studies, and your plans after graduation. For UCAS undergraduate applications, the personal statement has a limit of 4,000 characters or 47 lines, whichever is reached first. Postgraduate personal statements are submitted directly to universities and length requirements vary by institution.
Further guidance on writing your personal statement is available on our personal statement page.
Reference Letters
References are typically written by someone who knows you academically or professionally, such as a teacher, lecturer, or employer. A strong reference will speak to your academic ability, your approach to study and work, and your potential to succeed on your chosen course.
If you are currently studying or have recently left school or college, an academic reference is expected. If you have been in employment for some time, a professional reference from a line manager or supervisor is appropriate. When arranging your reference, ensure the following:
- Choose a referee who knows you well and can speak to your abilities with confidence
- The letter should be printed on official company or university letterhead
- The relationship between you and the referee should be clearly stated
- The reference should express confidence in your ability to complete the course
- Ensure the referee signs the letter before submission
Financial Documents
UK universities and the Home Office require evidence that international students can cover their tuition fees and living costs for the duration of their studies. For a Student visa application, Pakistani students must provide bank statements showing sufficient funds held for at least 28 consecutive days.
The required amount depends on whether the course is in London or outside London, and the length of the programme. Always check the current financial requirements on the UK Government website before preparing your documents.
