Russell Group Universities
The Russell Group is a self-selected association of 24 public research universities in the United Kingdom, established in 1994 to represent its members’ interests, principally to government and Parliament. The group takes its name from the Hotel Russell in London, where university heads originally met. All 24 members share a commitment to world-class research, high-quality teaching, and strong graduate outcomes.
In the QS World University Rankings, four of the top ten universities in the world, Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and University College London, are UK universities and members of the Russell Group.
What is the Purpose of the Russell Group?
Russell Group universities account for 65% of all world-leading research conducted in the UK, as assessed by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, and 91% of Russell Group research was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. This concentration of research activity attracts the highest calibre of academics and postgraduate students, and means students at Russell Group universities learn in an environment shaped by active, cutting-edge research.
For Pakistani students, studying at a Russell Group university carries strong international recognition with employers and institutions. Graduates from Russell Group universities tend to earn higher salaries and have better job prospects than those from other universities. Russell Group institutions also typically offer a higher staff-to-student ratio and a strong pastoral and academic support infrastructure.
Applying to a Russell Group University
Russell Group universities are applied to through UCAS in the same way as all other UK universities. Entry requirements tend to be higher than the national average and vary by institution and course.
Pakistani students should check the specific entry requirements for their chosen course carefully before applying, and ensure their IELTS score meets the institution’s language requirement.
