Scholarships Available to Pakistani Students
Chevening Scholarships
Chevening is the UK Government’s flagship international scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. It offers exceptional emerging leaders the opportunity to study a fully funded one-year master’s degree at a UK university. Pakistan is one of the top recipient countries, with around 50 to 60 scholarships awarded each year. The scholarship covers tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, return flights, and visa costs. Applications typically open in August each year. Visit chevening.org for full details and eligibility criteria.
Commonwealth Scholarships
Commonwealth Scholarships are open to Pakistani students who wish to pursue postgraduate study in the UK but could not otherwise afford to do so. Each year, around 700 students from Commonwealth countries are given the chance to undertake postgraduate degrees at UK universities. In Pakistan, the programme is administered jointly by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). 56 scholarships are available for Pakistani and AJK nationals, with 26 slots for Master’s and 30 for PhD programmes. Applications are submitted through both the HEC portal and the CSC’s online system. Visit the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website for current cycle information.
University Scholarships
Many UK universities offer their own merit-based and need-based scholarships for Pakistani students, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. These vary by institution and subject area, and some are specifically targeted at students from Pakistan. StudyIn’s advisors can identify relevant university scholarships as part of your application process and help ensure you apply at the right time.
Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are fully funded awards for graduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge, open to international students from any country. Around 80 new scholarships are awarded each year, covering university fees, a maintenance allowance, flights, and a discretionary allowance. Further information is available at gatescambridge.org.
Rhodes Scholarships
The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the world’s most prestigious postgraduate awards, supporting exceptional students to study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholarships cover all university fees, a personal stipend, health insurance, and return airfare. Pakistan is among the eligible countries. Visit rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk for eligibility details and application guidance.
How to Apply for a UK Scholarship
Scholarship applications typically require a strong academic record, a compelling personal statement, and references. Deadlines vary significantly by programme, and many major scholarships such as Chevening and Commonwealth require applications several months before the course start date. StudyIn advisors can help Pakistani students plan their scholarship timeline alongside their university application.
