Colleges of Further Education are popular with students taking university preparation courses or completing vocational qualifications on a full or part-time basis. Colleges in the UK perform a variety of roles, including further education for 16–18 year-olds, vocational training, and adult education.
Most UK colleges are public institutions, but there are also many private colleges that cater to specific types of students. Courses at UK colleges typically last for one or two years.
Qualification Types
International Foundation Year
An International Foundation Year is designed for international students who are nearing the end of secondary education in their home country but do not yet meet the entry requirements for direct admission to a UK university. Students follow a subject-specific pathway that also develops English language skills and academic study techniques.
International A-Levels
Many UK colleges offer an International A-Level programme that runs alongside the traditional A-Level programme for domestic students. In addition to core subject study, English language learning is also incorporated to support international students throughout their studies.
BTEC Nationals
BTEC Nationals are suited to students who have a clear sense of their career direction and wish to progress towards university study or employment. Similar in level to A-Levels, BTEC Nationals generally last two years and are typically begun at age 16.
HND (Higher National Diploma)
The Higher National Diploma prepares students for employment or further study within specific industries. Courses run for two years full-time or up to four years part-time, and the qualification is broadly equivalent to the first two years of an undergraduate degree.
