Applying to an Australian University
Australia has established itself as a major destination for international students, ranking third globally in terms of the number of students it attracts after the UK and the US.
When it comes to applying to Australian universities, the procedure typically involves a direct application to the institution of your preference. StudyIn offers free support for university applications, helping you select the right course and university.
Application Process to Study in Australia
1. Select your desired course and university
Selecting the right course and university is crucial. Consider your interests, career goals, and the institution’s reputation. Popular subjects like business, engineering, and computer science are widely available across Australia’s 42 universities.
Research and compare universities based on global rankings, faculty expertise, and campus facilities. Review the course curriculum, elective options, and internship opportunities to ensure they align with your career aspirations. Consider location, climate, and the local cost of living.
2. Gather necessary supporting documents
Australian universities require specific evidence to assess your suitability. In addition to academic transcripts and degrees, you will need:
- Proof of English Language Proficiency: Standard benchmarks have recently been raised. Most higher education degrees now require an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent), though some specific courses or foundation programmes may vary.
- Genuine Student (GS) Requirement: This has officially replaced the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) statement. You must provide targeted responses detailing your academic history, the specific value of the course to your future career, and your reasons for choosing Australia over other destinations.
- Financial Evidence: You must prove you have access to sufficient funds to cover your tuition and stay (detailed in step 4).
3. Submit your application
There is no centralised application system for international students in Australia. Each university must be applied to individually, typically through their specific online international application portal.
The Australian academic year consists of two main intakes:
- Semester 1: Starts in February or March. Applications should ideally be submitted by October or November of the previous year.
- Semester 2: Starts in July. The typical deadline for this intake is April or May.
Most universities require a non-refundable application fee, generally ranging from AUD 50 to AUD 100, though this can sometimes be waived if applying through an authorised partner like StudyIn.
4. Apply for your Student Visa
Once you have accepted a formal offer and received your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), you can apply for a Subclass 500 Student Visa.
- Visa Costs: The base application charge for a Student Visa is AUD 2,000 for the primary applicant.
- Financial Capacity: To secure the visa, you must demonstrate the financial ability to cover:
- Twelve months of your tuition fees.
- AUD 29,710 for annual living costs (the current requirement for a single student).
- Approximately AUD 2,000–3,000 for travel expenses.
Alternatively, you may show evidence of a parent or partner’s annual income of at least AUD 87,856. You are also required to maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your visa.
5. Arrive in Australia
Once your visa is granted, you can finalise your travel. It is advisable to arrive at least two weeks before your orientation week to secure accommodation and settle into your new surroundings before classes begin.

FAQs
When is the best time to apply for an Australian university intake?
It is highly recommended to apply at least 4 to 6 months before your course start date. For the February (Semester 1) intake, you should aim to submit by October. For the July (Semester 2) intake, aim for April. Applying early ensures you have enough time to receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and process your student visa.
What is the new “Genuine Student” (GS) requirement?
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaced the old GTE statement. It is a mandatory assessment where you must provide targeted answers within your visa application regarding your study history, your choice of course, and the career value (ROI) the degree offers you.
How much money do I need to show for my Australian Student Visa?
For a single student, you must show evidence of AUD 29,710 for annual living costs. Additionally, you must prove you can cover your first year of tuition fees and approximately AUD 2,000–3,000 for travel costs. Funds must be verifiable and held in a recognised bank account or loan facility.
Can I change my course or university after I arrive in Australia?
You can change your course, but you must remain enrolled in a course at the same AQF level or higher than your original visa grant. Moving to a lower-level course usually requires a brand-new visa application. Always consult an advisor before changing your enrolment.
Is the IELTS 6.0 requirement mandatory for all universities?
While the government benchmark is an IELTS 6.0, many universities require 6.5 or higher for specific degrees. If you fall short of the score, you can often package your degree with an ELICOS (English) course, provided this is arranged before your visa lodgement.
