EU Student Finance in the UK

From August 1st, 2021, all EU students not registered under the EU Settlement Scheme will require a study visa and be considered international for tuition fee purposes. They cannot apply for tuition fees or maintenance loans through UK government funding schemes.

Financial support for EU students will be available via international student finance options such as scholarships, grants, or bursaries, depending on individual circumstances.

Tuition Fee Loan for EU Students

You must have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme to apply for a tuition fee loan. Without this status, EU students must fund their tuition through other means, such as private funding or scholarships.

Maintenance Loan for EU Students

A maintenance loan is available to help with living costs while studying in the UK, but certain conditions apply:

  • Eligibility: Maintenance support is available to EU students who have lived in the UK, Gibraltar, the EEA, or Switzerland for at least five years before the start of their course.
  • Loan Amount: The amount a student receives depends on where they live and study within the UK.
  • Repayment: Maintenance loans must be repaid only after the student has graduated and is earning over a certain threshold (currently £27,295 per year as of 2024).

Additional Financial Support

Extra financial help and support are available to students who:

  • Have children: Childcare grants and other forms of support may be available.
  • Have a disability: Including long-term health conditions, mental health conditions, or specific learning difficulties. Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) can provide help with additional costs.
  • Are studying nursing, midwifery, or other NHS-related courses: NHS Bursaries or other forms of support may be available depending on the course and the student’s circumstances.
