Ireland University Application Deadlines
Before beginning your application, it is important to familiarise yourself with key Central Applications Office (CAO) deadlines and individual university timelines for 2026 entry.
The CAO application process typically opens in November each year for entry in the following autumn session. While the general deadline for submitting applications through the CAO is in early February, non-EU international students often apply directly to their chosen institution, where deadlines can vary significantly.
Major institutions in Ireland, such as Trinity College Dublin and the University of Limerick, have their own application processes separate from the CAO. For 2026 entry, Trinity College Dublin has a priority deadline of 1st February for most courses, though general international applications remain open until 30th June (subject to availability).
Always check with a StudyIn consultant for the latest on deadlines and availability of courses.

- 1st February: Normal closing date for applications (Cost: €50).
- 5th February: Online facility to amend course choices becomes available.
- 5th March: Late application facility opens.
- 1st May: Closing date for late applications.
- 1st July: Final “Change of Mind” deadline for course choices.
Applicants from outside the EU generally do not need to submit their university applications through the CAO.
Intakes in Ireland
Ireland primarily offers two intakes for international students: the Autumn (September) intake and the Spring (January/February) intake. The September intake is the major intake, offering the full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The January intake is smaller, primarily focused on specific postgraduate courses and pathway programmes.

FAQs
Do international students have to use the CAO?
No. Most non-EU international students apply directly to the university’s international office rather than using the CAO system. However, if you are an EU citizen or have a specific residency status, the CAO is the mandatory route for undergraduate courses.
Can I still apply after the 1st February deadline?
Yes. While the CAO has a “Late Application” facility until 1st May, many universities accept direct international applications as late as June or July, provided there are still seats available in the programme.
When should I apply for the January intake?
For the January/Spring intake, applications usually open in the preceding July or August. We recommend submitting your application by October to allow enough time for visa processing and accommodation arrangements.
Is there a different deadline for postgraduate applications?
Postgraduate deadlines are set by individual universities and specific departments. While many close in May or June, high-demand courses in Data Science or Finance may close as early as January or February.
