Overview
Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) is one of Ireland’s newest higher education institutions, established in 2021 through the merger of Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology. Building on the legacy of these well-regarded institutes, TUS has quickly developed a reputation for applied learning, industry engagement, and regional impact.
The university serves over 14,000 students across a multi-campus network spanning the Midlands and Midwest of Ireland. Its programmes cover areas such as engineering, science, business, computing, creative arts, and health, with a strong emphasis on practical, career-focused education.
A defining feature of TUS is its commitment to innovation and research-led teaching. The university supports enterprise development and collaborates closely with regional industries, ensuring that courses remain aligned with workforce needs. Smaller class sizes and accessible faculty contribute to a supportive learning environment, particularly beneficial for international students adapting to a new academic system.
Services
International students are supported through dedicated services coordinated by the International Office and Student Services teams. Orientation programmes help new students settle into academic life, covering practical topics such as registration, accommodation, and living in Ireland.
Ongoing support includes academic assistance, English language support where required, and access to counselling, health services, and career guidance. TUS places strong emphasis on student wellbeing and inclusion.
Campus life is active, with a variety of clubs and societies including drama, dance, film, and computing. The Students’ Union plays a key role in organising events and supporting student engagement, helping international students integrate into campus life.
Rankings
As a recently established university, TUS is still developing its position in global rankings. However, its predecessor institutions were well regarded in Ireland for technological and vocational education, particularly in engineering, science, and business.
Accommodation
TUS offers a range of accommodation options across its campuses, including student apartments, shared houses, and self-catered residences. Options typically include single, twin, and shared rooms, catering to different budgets and preferences.
While on-campus accommodation availability varies by location, students are supported by accommodation offices that provide guidance on securing housing both on and off campus.
