Once you have successfully been accepted into a course at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, you can apply for a Canadian student visa (study permit). A Canada study permit is a student visa for international students who wish to pursue academic, research, or vocational study at a designated learning institution in Canada.

Applying for a Canadian Student Visa 2026

The Canadian government has introduced significant updates to the study permit process for 2026, including a national cap on study permit applications and new attestation requirements. Ensuring your application is complete and follows the latest IRCC guidelines is essential for a successful outcome.

Types of Student Visas in Canada

Canada offers different pathways for international students based on their level of study and location:

  • Regular Study Permit: The standard permit for most international students. For 2026, most undergraduate and college applicants must also provide a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL).
  • Master’s and PhD Exemption: As of 1 January 2026, students enrolled in Master’s or Doctoral programmes at public institutions are exempt from the national study permit cap and do not require a PAL.
  • Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ): Students intending to study in Quebec must obtain a CAQ before applying for their federal study permit.

Exemptions to the Canada Student Visa

Certain individuals may not require a study permit to study in Canada:

  • Short-Term Courses: Courses lasting six months or less do not require a permit, though you may still need a visitor visa or eTA.
  • Family or Staff of Foreign Representatives: Accredited by Global Affairs Canada.
  • Members of Foreign Armed Forces: From countries designated under the Visiting Forces Act.
  • Registered Indians in Canada: Individuals with Registered Indian status.
  • Minor Children: Minor children already in Canada with parents authorised to work or study.

Canada Student Visa Eligibility

To qualify for a Canadian study permit in 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Acceptance by a DLI: Secure an unconditional letter of acceptance (LOA) from a recognised DLI.
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): Provide a PAL from the province where you will study (unless exempt).
  • Proof of Financial Support: Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, travel, and living expenses. For 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show at least $22,895 CAD, while those in Quebec must show $24,617 CAD.
  • Clean Background: Have no criminal record and provide a police clearance certificate if requested.
  • Medical Examination: Undergo a medical exam to prove good health, if necessary.
  • Intent to Leave: Convince the immigration officer of your intention to depart Canada once your permit expires.

Required Documents

To successfully receive your visa to study in Canada, you are required to supply the following:

  • Unconditional Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) (for undergraduate/college students)
  • All academic documents, including certified degrees, diplomas, and transcripts (10th onwards)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL)
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining your study goals and home ties
  • Two recent passport-size photographs
  • Proof of tuition fee payment and a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) or bank statements
  • Medical exam and Biometrics

How long does it take to receive a Study Permit?

Processing times vary depending on the country of application. On average, standard applications take 8–12 weeks. However, PhD applicants and their families may be eligible for expedited processing, with decisions often issued in approximately 14 days.

Working While You Study

As of late 2024 and through 2026, international students are permitted to work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions. During scheduled academic breaks, students may work unlimited hours.

Student Permit Application Process

1. Check that you are eligible

Ensure you meet the 2026 eligibility requirements, including the new financial thresholds and the PAL requirement for your specific programme level.

2. Prepare your application

Gather your supporting documents, paying close attention to your Proof of Funds. Ensure bank statements are recent (last 4 months) and clearly show the required CAD 22,895 (or CAD 24,617 for Quebec).

3. Submit your application

Most applications must be submitted electronically via the IRCC portal. Once submitted, you will receive a request to provide your Biometrics. Once approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Introduction Letter to present to the border officer upon arrival.

FAQs

Do I need a PAL for a Master’s degree in Canada?

No. For 2026, students admitted to Master’s and Doctoral (PhD) programmes at public institutions are exempt from the PAL requirement and the national study permit cap.

What is the minimum bank balance required for a Canadian student visa?

For a single applicant outside Quebec, you must show $22,895 CAD for living expenses, plus the cost of your first year of tuition and travel. If you are bringing family members, this amount increases significantly.

Can I study in Canada for 6 months without a visa?

You can study for up to six months on a visitor visa or eTA. However, if you think you might want to continue your studies or work part-time, it is strongly recommended to apply for a study permit before you arrive.

Can I switch universities after arriving in Canada?

Yes, but you must notify IRCC through your online account and ensure your new school is a DLI. In 2026, changing your level of study (e.g., from a Bachelor’s to a Diploma) may require a new PAL and a study permit extension.
