Overview
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), formerly Ryerson University, is a public research institution located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Ontario. Established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, it was created to address Canada’s post-war demand for skilled tradespeople.
TMU offers more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across seven faculties, including the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, the Ted Rogers School of Management, and the Faculty of Arts. The University is particularly recognised for its emphasis on experiential learning, with every undergraduate programme incorporating hands-on opportunities such as co-operative education, internships, field placements, and studio-based work. As of the most recent data, 89% of students who actively seek co-op placements secure one, and 88.2% of graduates are employed within six months of completing their studies.
The University’s Zone Learning network is a standout feature, comprising 11 incubators that support student-led innovation and entrepreneurship. The DMZ, TMU’s flagship incubator, has helped launch over 2,600 startups, raised more than $2.94 billion in funding, and created over 23,000 jobs, earning global recognition as one of the leading university-based business incubators.
Located within Toronto’s Garden District, the campus offers direct access to Canada’s largest city, providing students with unparalleled opportunities for networking, employment, and cultural engagement. TMU’s urban setting, combined with its career-focused academic model and strong industry ties, makes it a compelling choice for international students seeking a dynamic and professionally oriented education in Canada.
