UK Engineering Courses

Introduction to Engineering for Pakistani Students

The UK is home to some of the highest-ranked engineering schools in the world, offering a broad range of specialisms from civil and mechanical engineering to chemical, electrical, and computer engineering. Engineers are responsible for designing and building the systems and structures that underpin modern life, from transport infrastructure and medical technology to telecommunications and energy systems.

UK engineering degrees are highly respected by employers globally, and Pakistani graduates with UK engineering qualifications are in strong demand both at home and internationally. Choosing the right engineering course and university is an important decision and depends on your academic background, career goals, and the area you wish to specialise in.

Types of Engineering Degree

UK universities offer two main types of engineering degree. A BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) is a three-year undergraduate degree that provides the training required to work as an Incorporated Engineer. A MEng (Master of Engineering) is a four or five-year integrated degree and is the standard route for those wishing to become a Chartered Engineer, which is the highest professional engineering qualification in the UK. Some universities allow students to switch between the BEng and MEng during the early years of study.

The main engineering disciplines available at UK universities include:

  • Chemical Engineering applies physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, and economics to the process of converting raw materials into useful products. Chemical engineers work across the energy, pharmaceutical, food, and manufacturing sectors, ensuring processes are safe, sustainable, and efficient.
  • Civil Engineering covers the design, construction, and maintenance of the built environment, including bridges, roads, dams, buildings, and water systems. It includes sub-disciplines such as structural, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation engineering.
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism, covering areas such as power systems, telecommunications, control systems, and signal processing.
  • Mechanical Engineering applies the principles of physics and materials science to the design, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It covers thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, robotics, and manufacturing processes.
  • Computer Engineering focuses on the design of computers and computer systems, including hardware design, embedded systems, and software development for industrial applications.
  • Mechatronics Engineering combines electrical and mechanical engineering, focusing on the design of integrated electromechanical systems such as automated manufacturing equipment, robotics, and automotive systems.

Engineering Entry Requirements for Pakistani Students

Entry requirements vary between universities and disciplines. The following are typical requirements for Pakistani students.

Undergraduate

  • Completion of Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC / FSc / A-Levels) including Mathematics and Physics; top universities typically require results equivalent to UK A-Level AAB or above
  • Some universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, require additional admissions tests
  • English language proficiency:
    • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5–7.0, with no component below 6.0
    • PTE Academic: Overall score of 61–67
    • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 90–100

Postgraduate

  • A recognised undergraduate degree in engineering or a related field, typically equivalent to a UK 2:1 or above
  • Some programmes may require relevant work or research experience
  • English language proficiency:
    • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5–7.0, with no component below 6.0
    • PTE Academic: Overall score of 61–67
    • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 90–100

Engineering Careers and Graduate Salaries

Engineering graduates are among the most employable in the UK, with strong demand across construction, energy, defence, aerospace, technology, and manufacturing. Career options range from structural and civil engineering project roles to software development, systems design, consulting, and research.

Many Pakistani graduates pursue Chartered Engineer status, which significantly increases earning potential and career progression.

Graduate Salaries

The average starting salary for engineering graduates in the UK is approximately £37,994, which has risen significantly in recent years. The highest-paying entry-level roles are found in academia, rail and civil engineering, and the oil and gas sector.

Chartered Engineers can expect an average salary of around £52,000, with senior engineers earning between £47,000 and £82,000 per year.
