Overview

The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is a public university located in the city of Charlottetown in the province of Prince Edward Island. As the only university in the province, UPEI has seven faculties (business, arts, nursing, sustainable design engineering, science and veterinary medicine) and two schools (Climate Change & Adaptation and Mathematical & Computational Sciences) that offer a wide range of programs.

Students wanting to pursue undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees can choose from the programs best suited to their interests. Currently, the university is developing a Faculty of Medicine closely associated with the Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Founded in 1969, UPEI has a rich history with roots in two founding institutions: Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan’s University. Today, the university honours its proud legacy through academic excellence and research innovation that attracts thousands of students from Canada and other parts of the world. UPEI attracts 30% of its student population from over 90 countries.

Services

The International Buddy Program at UPEI is a unique opportunity for new students to mingle with their seniors in order to know more about the country, education system and university life. The university also provides assistance through its International Student Office, which assigns an advisor to the student in need of any guidance.

Accommodation

Living on campus gives ample opportunities for students to participate in exciting residence events that ease the transition to a new life in a new country. UPEI has on-campus residence options that accommodate around 434 students in Bill and Denise Andrew Hall, Bernardine Hall and Blanchard Hall. The Bill and Denise Andrew Hall has two-room suites with single bedrooms, whereas the Blanchard Hall has two single bedrooms with a living room and a kitchenette. The Bernardine Hall offers suites having two double bedrooms with a shared bathroom. This hall is co-ed, but only one floor is reserved for female students.

Off-campus housing options, including the Homestay Program (living with family) managed by UPEI, are available for students who cannot get a place in the residence halls. Apart from the Homestay Program, one can also avail of the off-campus rental housing services around the area to stay close to the campus grounds.

Location

The University is located in Charlottetown, the capital city of Prince Edward Island and the birthplace of Canada's Confederation. The city serves as a perfect setting for students' university life as it is dotted with historic streets, parks, shops, theatres and art galleries, making the experience culturally and academically rich and conducive to learning.

The University of Prince Edward Island is the only university in the province, making it the central place for all educational and research activities. Charlottetown's small airport caters to two leading air carriers, Air Canada and WestJet. Students need to connect with one of these airlines in Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, or Ottawa, bringing them to Charlottetown Airport.
