Overview
University College London (UCL), founded in 1826, is one of the UK’s most prestigious and pioneering universities. Known as London’s Global University, it ranks 9th in the world, 5th in Europe, and 4th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings 2026. UCL was the University of the Year 2024 (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024) and is 2nd in the UK for research power (REF 2021). It was the first university in England to admit students regardless of religion or background, and it remains committed to widening access and delivering education with global impact.
UCL has a vibrant community of 51,000 students, representing 150+ nationalities, with 50% of students coming from outside the UK. It is a member of the Russell Group and the League of European Research Universities (LERU). The university has an outstanding record of academic achievement, with 33 Nobel laureates among its former staff and students.
UCL employs around 18,000 staff, including academics, researchers, and professional services teams, across 11 academic faculties. UCL’s Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) provides degree preparation courses, summer programmes for international students, modern foreign language modules from beginner to near‑native level, and academic English support. It is also home to the UCL Academic Communication Centre and the UCL Summer School.

Services
UCL’s International Office provides a comprehensive orientation programme for new overseas students before the start of term, helping them acclimatise to life in London and at UCL. This orientation covers a range of topics, from finding accommodation to understanding the UK’s healthcare system, ensuring students feel well-prepared from day one.
Each undergraduate student is assigned a personal tutor, while departmental and faculty tutors are also available to offer academic guidance. The role of personal tutors includes:
- Helping students settle into life at UCL with practical support and encouragement.
- Offering opportunities to discuss academic progress and develop independent learning skills.
- Providing support during challenging times, including advice on maintaining academic standards and finding specialist help if needed.
- Assisting students in enhancing their academic studies and building their CVs.
- Acting as a reliable point of contact throughout their university journey.
UCL’s Student Union is one of the largest in the UK, offering over 250 clubs and societies. From cultural and sports groups to academic and interest-based societies, there are numerous opportunities for students to socialise and engage with the wider UCL community.

University College London was ranked the second-best university in the UK for research power, with 93 per cent of the research graded 4* ‘world-leading’ and 3* ‘internationally excellent’. UCL's research received a 'grade point average' of 3.50 (out of 4) – an improvement from 3.22 in 2014.
The UCL Institute of Education has been ranked as the best university in the world for the study of Education for the last 12 years (QS World University Rankings by Subject) and has also received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, a celebration of excellence, innovation and public benefit in work carried out by UK colleges and universities.

Accommodation
UCL guarantees accommodation for all first‑year international undergraduate students who apply by the published deadlines. While postgraduate students are welcome to apply for UCL-managed housing, places for taught postgraduate students are not guaranteed due to limited availability.
