Overview
The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore's oldest and most prestigious autonomous university, tracing its roots back to 1905 when it began as a small medical school. It has since grown into a comprehensive research university spanning 17 faculties and schools, with its main Kent Ridge campus recognised as one of the largest and most self-contained in Asia. Services
International students are supported from the outset by the International Students Coordinating Office (ISCO), which runs a dedicated International Students Orientation each August, combining team-bonding activities with cultural intelligence workshops designed to help newcomers adjust to both NUS and Singaporean life. The NUS Student Union also runs an International Students' Buddy Programme, pairing new arrivals with local student buddies for a semester of guided events, including a Welcome Tea and city exploration activities.
Ongoing support comes from the Office of Student Affairs, which oversees counselling, wellness workshops and peer support circles alongside residential admissions and community engagement. NUS ranks 8th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it Asia's top-placed institution.
In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, NUS achieved its strongest performance since the subject rankings began in 2011, with a record 28 subjects placed in the global top 10. The university also performs consistently well in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and US News Best Global Universities list, and has held the top spot in the QS Asia rankings for multiple consecutive years, underlining its position as the region's leading research university.
Accommodation
NUS offers three main types of on-campus housing: Residential Colleges, Residences and Halls, each with a distinct community feel, from the immersive learning-and-living model of the Colleges to the more independent, cross-cultural Residences.
Housing is allocated through the Office of Student Affairs, and while demand is high, students are asked to rank their preferences during the application process.
Location
NUS's main campus sits in Kent Ridge, in the south-west of Singapore, a green, hilly precinct well connected to the rest of the island by the NUS Internal Shuttle Bus network and nearby MRT stations. Central Singapore, with its shopping, dining and cultural attractions, is easily reached within around 30 minutes, while Changi Airport is roughly 45 minutes away by taxi or public transport.
The campus itself is largely self-contained, with canteens serving cuisines from across Asia, from chicken rice to laksa, alongside sports facilities, nature trails and student hubs. Singapore's compact size and excellent transport links mean students can easily explore neighbourhoods such as Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam, making it simple to combine campus life with wider exploration of the city-state.
