Studying a Master’s in the UK

A postgraduate or master’s course in the UK follows the successful completion of an undergraduate degree and typically lasts just one year, offering a significant advantage over the two-year programmes common in India, the USA, and Australia.

This condensed structure provides a superior return on investment by allowing Indian students to save on overall tuition and living costs while gaining a globally respected qualification. By accelerating the academic journey, students can enter the global job market much sooner with advanced skills and achieve faster career progression.

While most taught master’s degrees are completed in a single academic year, UK universities also offer flexible part-time options that generally span two to three years. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for those balancing professional commitments, though it requires a high level of academic focus and strong time management.

Types of Master’s Degrees in the UK

Taught master’s degrees

Taught programmes are the most popular option for Indian students and include Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Master of Engineering (MEng).

Students attend lectures, seminars, and tutorials similar to an undergraduate degree, and assessment may include exams, coursework, and a dissertation or final project.

Research master’s degrees

Research degrees focus on independent study under academic supervision and are assessed primarily through a thesis. Common research degrees include MSc (by Research), MRes, and MPhil. These are often chosen by students planning to progress to PhD study.

Master’s Fees for Indian Students

The average cost of a postgraduate and master’s degree in the UK for international students is around £17,100 per year. Fees vary depending on the university, subject, and location.

Compared to graduate schools in the USA, UK postgraduate study is significantly more affordable, and studying in the UK can be 30–60% cheaper overall due to the shorter course duration.

Living costs and UKVI maintenance requirements

  • London: £1,529 per month (up to £13,761)
  • Outside London: £1,171 per month (up to £10,539)

Funds must be held in a student’s or parent’s bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before submitting the visa application. A 5–10% buffer is recommended to account for INR–GBP exchange rate fluctuations.

  • GREAT Scholarships: £10,000 tuition fee awards for Indian students
  • Chevening Scholarships: Fully funded scholarships covering tuition and living costs

Eligibility Criteria for a UK Master’s

Entry requirements vary by university and course, but generally include:

  • Academic Requirements: Completion of a recognised 3 or 4-year undergraduate degree in a relevant subject.
    • Tier 1 Universities (India): Typically require a minimum of 60–65% for entry into top-tier UK institutions.
    • Other Universities: Many UK universities accept 55% (UK 2:2 equivalent) for a wide range of master’s programmes.
  • English Language Requirements (IELTS Waivers): While IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL are widely accepted, many UK universities offer an IELTS waiver for Indian students who scored 70–75% or higher in English in Class XII (CBSE/ISC and select State Boards such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal).
Note: An official Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your college may also be required.
  • Work Experience: Professional programmes like an MBA typically require 2–3 years of post-graduation work experience, though many “Early Career” MBAs and MSc programmes do not.
  • Pre-Master’s & Integrated CAS (iCAS): If you do not meet the direct entry marks, you can take a Pre-Master’s programme. Some universities provide an Integrated CAS (iCAS), allowing you to cover both the Pre-Master’s and the Master’s degree under a single visa.
  • Required Documents:
    • Degree Certificate and Academic Transcripts.
    • Statement of Purpose (SOP): Highlighting your motivation and career goals.
    • Letters of Recommendation (LOR): Usually two (academic or professional).
    • Valid Passport and Proof of Funds (Maintenance for the 2026 visa is roughly £1,171/month outside London and £1,529/month in London).

Graduate Route Visa (Post-Study Work)

Indian students graduating from a UK Master’s programme are currently eligible for the Graduate Route, which allows you to stay and work in the UK for 2 years (or 18 months for applications made after 1 January 2027) without needing an employer sponsor.
