Using Contractions<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018<em>It\u2019s essential to learn the exam techniques to achieve the target score effectively. Otherwise, you wouldn\u2019t be able to pass the IELTS by deadline.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is this statement correct?<\/strong> No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Because this sentence uses contractions (e.g. it\u2019s, wouldn\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p>In the formal academic writing, you should not use contractions. \u2018I\u2019ll\u2019, \u2018don\u2019t\u2019, \u2018can\u2019t\u2019&#8230; they all decrease your writing score. For example, \u2018if you do not use contractions, your essay will be better.\u2019<\/p>\n<h3>2. Using numbers instead of words<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018<em>According to the research, 3 out of 46 people are under 10 years of age. 15 out of 50 people are over 25 years of age.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The rule of formal academic writing is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Numbers under ten must be spelled out<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Numbers at the beginning of a sentence must be spelled out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Therefore, the above sentence should be;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>According to the research, three out of 46 people are under ten years of age. Fifteen out of 46 people are over 25 years of age.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Note that dates and years (i.e. 12th November, 2017) or percentages (52%) are some of the exceptions.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Mixing countable and uncountable nouns<\/h3>\n<p>You may have already known that sheep, deer and fish are uncountable nouns; and you never use plural verb for them.
